Yes, we do offer 2 days of post op care after sterilisation for stray dogs. We provide 2 days of post-operative care. The dog is released on the 5th day once deemed fit to be released by the vet. If a dog is not fit or has not healed completely by Day 5, they continue to remain with us, receiving medical attention, food and care until they are fit to be released.

No, we do not release dogs immediately after sterilisation. We follow an Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) approved 5-day Animal Birth Control (ABC) program.

Our ABC Process:

With humane treatment being the core of all we do, we follow a strict protocol to ensure that every dog that is released is fit and perfectly healed after surgery. The normal process and timeline are as follows:

Day 1– admission of dogs by volunteers or volunteer-assisted dog catching programs with CCC dog catching team

Day 2 – veterinary assessment of dogs, and surgery as per vet recommendation

Day 3 and 4 – recovery post operation, with appropriate medicines and food and care

Day 5 – release in the same spot of pick up, aided by volunteers on ground.

If a dog is not fit or has not healed completely by Day 5, they continue to remain with us, receiving medical attention, food and care till such time as they can be released.

Yes, stray dogs caught for sterilisation are released back in their same location after surgery and post op care as per the Animal Birth Control rules in India.

Every stray dog that is sterilised and released will have its left ear notched (V-shaped cut to the ear). This helps to identify that the stray dog has gone through a sterilisation operation and has been vaccinated against rabies too.

CCC conducts FREE sterilisations of stray dogs. Dogs once sterilised are released back to original locations per the Animal Birth control rules and AWBI guidelines. Relocation of stray dogs and cats is illegal as per the animal welfare rules in India. Stray dogs and cats have to be sterilised as per the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules 2023 and released back in the same area from where they were picked up.

In an ABC program, stray dogs from a specific area are picked up, sterilised, and vaccinated before being returned to the same territory. It is critical to reintroduce stray dogs into the same territory since any area that is devoid of stray dogs will not remain dog free. Instead, more stray dogs from other areas (potentially unsterilised and unvaccinated) will move in to take up that space. However, when sterilised and vaccinated strays are returned to the same territory, new dogs do not enter.

Because sterilised dogs do not reproduce, the number of puppies in that area decreases which lowers the number of resident stray dogs. Sterilisation reduces the inherent nervousness or aggression that some dogs may have, resulting in fewer dog fights and inadvertent bites to humans. The dog population becomes stable and rabies-free over time, with a significant drop in numbers owing to natural deaths.
