What are fleas on dogs?

Fleas are small, parasitic insects that commonly infest dogs (and other animals) and feed on their blood. These wingless creatures have flattened bodies and are usually brown or reddish-brown in colour and measure about 1-3 millimeters in length. Fleas are highly specialized for living on their hosts, equipped with strong legs that enable them to move quickly through fur or feathers.

Fleas are commonly found on dogs, particularly in warm and humid environments. Female fleas lay eggs on the dog, which then fall off into the environment, such as the dog’s bedding, carpet, or furniture. For example, fleas can carry the bacterium responsible for causing bartonellosis (also known as cat scratch disease), a bacterial infection that can affect dogs. Additionally, fleas can serve as intermediate hosts for tapeworms, which can infect dogs if they accidentally ingest fleas while grooming themselves.

Preventing and treating flea infestations is important for the well-being of all dogs. Regular grooming, including combing the fur with a fine-toothed flea comb, can help detect fleas early. Regular cleaning of your dog’s living environment also helps in controlling flea infestations.

Protecting stray dogs from ticks and fleas is important for their health and well-being. For stray dog caretakers bathing the stray dogs is not always an option however, tick and flea prevention products can be used for them after consulting a veterinarian. These can include spot-on treatments, powder, anti-flea and tick sprays or oral medications.

A friendly dog can be groomed by brushing the fur to remove fleas and ticks. Also, need to pay special attention to areas like the neck, ears, and tail where ticks and fleas often hide. Grooming also helps to remove dirt and debris that can attract pests.
