Dogs have a unique way of sweating!
Do you know that dogs, like humans, also sweat? However, they do not mop their brows. They primarily sweat through their paw pads. Although paw pads help in heat dissipation, they are not as effective as panting.
Dogs do not sweat through their skin like humans do. They regulate their body temperature by panting, which helps evaporate moisture from their tongue and lungs. After a game of fetch or on a hot summer day, dogs take time to cool off often by lying in a shaded spot.
Dogs have two types of sweat glands. Merocrine glands, found on their paw pads, help cool the body. These are activated during heat or stress. This is why you may notice damp footprints on particularly hot days. Apocrine glands, found on their body, are not used for cooling. Instead, they release pheromones that help dogs identify and communicate with other dogs through scent.
