Why relocation of stray dogs won’t work? The vacuum effect explained!

Relocation of stray dogs may seem like a quick solution, but it does not solve the problem of stray dogs. It only makes the situation worse. Moreover, relocation of stray dogs is illegal and will not work because of the “Vacuum Effect”.

What is the vacuum effect?
When sterilised and vaccinated stray dogs are relocated, their space becomes vacant like a vacuum. Soon, new unsterilised and unvaccinated stray dogs from nearby areas fill in the empty space.

The new dogs start competing for food and shelter, leading to dog fights, mating, and more puppies. This creates an unstable dog population. Unvaccinated dogs mean higher risks of diseases like rabies, making the area unsafe for everyone.

What actually works?
Relocation contradicts the ABC (Animal Birth Control) rules, which clearly states that stray dogs must be sterilised, vaccinated, and returned to their original location.

Sterilisation and vaccination are the only two scientifically proven and humane way to control the stray dog population and prevent the spread of diseases.

When stray dogs are sterilised – they do not produce unwanted puppies, are calmer, and the population stabilises over time.

When dogs are vaccinated, the risk of rabies and disease are prevented, and communities became safer.

This why responsible feeding and ABC programs like the one CCC conducts are the only effective and ethical way to manage stray dogs.

How CCC helps?
(CCC) conducts free sterilisation for stray dogs across Pune PMC, PCMC, and nearby areas. Every stray dog sterilised at our centres is also given two very important vaccines – ARV (Anti-rabies and 9-in-1).
