Symptoms of a Flea Infestation in Dogs
Did you know that heavy flea infestation can lead to anemia (low blood cell count) in dogs? Additionally, fleas can transmit various diseases, including acting as hosts for common types of tapeworms.
If you’re a pet owner or care for stray dogs, it’s crucial to be vigilant for signs of flea infestation and take prompt action to eliminate the fleas.
Regularly inspect your dog’s coat for fleas or eggs, paying particular attention to areas like behind the ears, around the neck, and underneath the tail—favorite hiding spots for fleas.
Look out for these signs that your dog may have fleas:
- Scratching due to flea bites
- Irritated skin due to constant scratching and biting to get rid of the fleas
- Hair loss due to scratching – usually at the base of the tail or hind legs
Flea bites can cause allergic reactions in some dogs. Prevention is definitely better than cure. There are many topical and oral medicines available to fight flea infestations in dogs. Do consult a veterinarian for the proper line of treatment for your dogs.
