What is false Pregnancy/Pseudo-pregnancy in dogs?

False pregnancy, also known as pseudopregnancy or pseudocyesis, is a condition that occurs in female dogs (and other animals) where they exhibit signs and symptoms of pregnancy, even though they are not actually pregnant. This condition typically occurs within a few weeks to a couple of months after the dog’s heat cycle (estrus).

Here are some common signs and symptoms of false pregnancy in dogs:

  1. Nesting behaviour: The dog may start to exhibit nesting behaviours, such as gathering and arranging blankets or other materials to create a nest-like area.
  2. Enlarged abdomen: The dog’s abdomen may appear swollen or enlarged, resembling the appearance of a pregnant belly.
  3. Changes in appetite: Some dogs may experience changes in appetite, either an increase or a decrease in food consumption.
  4. Behavioural changes: Dogs may display mothering behaviours, such as being overly protective of toys, stuffed animals, or even of their human owners.
  5. Mammary gland changes: The mammary glands may become enlarged and may even produce milk.
  6. Restlessness or anxiety: The dog may display signs of restlessness, anxiety, or agitation.

It’s important to note that false pregnancy is a normal physiological response in some female dogs and is not considered a medical problem. The signs and symptoms usually resolve on their own within a few weeks.

However, if the signs are severe, persist for an extended period, or if the dog appears to be in pain or distress, it’s essential to consult a veterinarian for further evaluation and potential treatment.
